Night and Day
Model, writer, and beauty blogger Ruth Crilly (@modelrecommends) shares her beauty secrets for 24 hours of radiant skin.
OVERNIGHT SUCCESS
All face-saving beauty routines should begin with a proper cleanse to remove the day’s makeup and grime and leave skin perfectly prepped. Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Micro Essence Cleansing adds a little luxury to the proceedings with its silky texture. The balm-to-oil formula cleans brilliantly but doesn’t leave your face feeling stripped or tight.
Most nights, but especially if my skin feels dull or dry, I apply a treatment serum before my face oil or night cream. Clinique’s Smart Custom Serum hydrates where needed, but also helps to address uneven skin tone and loss of radiance.
For radiant, supple and instantly glowing skin, Sisley’s Black Rose Precious Face Oil is a total treat. It smells incredible which – strictly speaking - shouldn’t sway me, but I love a bit of a fragrant face massage before I go to sleep. This dry oil feels so nourishing but there’s no greasy residue.
I quite often smooth on Charlotte Tilbury’s Overnight Bronze & Glow Mask as a final step. This gradual tanner gives skin a gorgeous sunkissed glow and so I wake up looking far more rested than I actually am. The foolproof formula gives a very natural, even colour but also contains ingredients to soothe and moisturise, so there’s no harm in this being a one-stop solution if you’re pressed for time.

Talking of one-stop solutions, Clarins’ BB Skin Detox Fluid offers pretty much everything you could ask for from a face base. This foundation-with-benefits gives good coverage, a long-lasting finish and the most brilliant glow. It’s hydrating without being greasy, has an SPF25 and contains antioxidants to help protect skin from pollution.
If I’m going in for a higher coverage foundation then I’ll boost my skin beforehand with an illuminating primer. Laura Mercier’s Radiance Primer is one of the best for giving a megawatt glow and its lightweight, fresh-feeling formula also ticks the antioxidant box for that extra bit of daytime protection.
Those trying to avoid added shine will love MAC’s Oil Control Lotion. It gives a beautifully matte base and helps makeup to stick around for longer, especially on the t-zone or if you have particularly oily skin. It feels fresh and light but surprisingly hydrating – this is a great moisturiser if you worry about your foundation slipping or going patchy as the day wears on.
I seem to have worked backwards here, but I’ll reiterate the importance of a good cleanse, even in the morning. As a very quick bonus step, try following your cleanse with StarSkin’s 7-Second Morning Mask Miracle Pads; these multi-taskers brighten, moisturise and prime the skin ready for makeup.
